Family Selection Process

Be advised - these steps can take 4-6 months to complete.

1. Family Recruitment Orientation

Orientation meetings are scheduled as needed.

2. Pre-Application Returned

Return completed Family Profile and Credit Authorization forms to Habitat.

3. First Credit Review Approved

If your credit report is approved, you will be invited to submit a full application.

4. Application Completed

Habitat Golden Empire will schedule an appointment with you. At the appointment, volunteers will help you fill out the application. You must bring many documents to the appointment, for instance, your tax returns, paycheck stubs, driver's license, proof of legal residency, and proof of auto insurance. You'll receive instructions about what to bring to the interview.

5. Ability to Pay Approved

A family's ability to pay a mortgage is reviewed by Habitat Golden Empire. If you can afford to pay the mortgage, you will go to the next step.

6. Information Session

Families hear specific details about the homes, their locations and further details about homeownership with Habitat.

7. Home Visits

Trained volunteers interview your family in your current home. The volunteers try to verify that your family needs affordable housing and that your family is willing to partner with Habitat.

8. Selection Meeting

The Family Selection Committee meets to decide which families meet all the criteria. The Committee makes recommendations to the Board of Directors of Habitat Golden Empire. The Board votes to accept the new Habitat families.
